How To Live A Conscious Life... Starting Today!

Have you ever seen ants marching in search of food? They just follow one another in an almost endless game that seems to drone on and on. Does your life feel like an ant's life – as if you're going from day to day, doing the same thing, the same way, and nothing ever changes?

If so, then there's a very good probability you're not living consciously.

Do you want to get more out of your life? It's never too late to make a new choice or reverse your life's course. One way to live a more enriched life is to be conscious of what you're doing at every moment. This way, you stay connected with your behavior and feelings.

Conscious living is being aware of your life and the things you're doing. It's about taking the time to stop and smell the roses so you can see where you fit into the whole picture. Living consciously is a vital component in enjoying the fleeting moments we have on Earth.

It's important to take note of what's going on around us and be aware of what we're doing. Living consciously brings us an understanding of what we're capable of doing and paves the way for us to get where we want to go.

Knowing what you want, choosing how you spend your time, and staying in touch with your feelings are indicators of a conscious life.

You can create the life you desire with conscious living.

    • What Does it Mean to Live Consciously?

Living consciously involves re-gaining control over your life. Rather than doing something automatically and with no real thought, you’ll ponder what you want to do and how you want to go about it.

Living consciously means you get to see the people you wish to see and take part in the activities you prefer. When you live consciously, you consider what you want to eat and how you want to spend your hour of free time. You discover true freedom of choice.

      • Let me take a moment to recommend two books on this subject:

        1. "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle
        2. "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle

These are my favorites. They are on my shelf. I've read both of them multiple times.

        • Create the life you want one step at a time.

Rome wasn't built in a day.

          • Spend some time exploring what you already love about your life. Also investigate what you'd like to change.

          • Then, think about how you can take deliberate steps to create the life you desire.

          • Live in the present moment.

You've most likely heard this suggestion before. But what does it really mean to live in the moment? Consider this example:

            • While you're visiting your mother, think about her and enjoy your conversation and activities together. Avoid making your store list mentally or trying to recall what else you have to do today. Just stay in the present moment with your mother and focus on what the two of you are doing.

            • Know yourself.

Awareness of your likes and dislikes is important to conscious living.

              • Learn what's important to you. Discover what makes you tick, what drives you, and what you find inspiring.

              • Self-understanding is an integral part of living life consciously because if you know your preferences and motivations, you can then create circumstances that will enable you to accomplish your goals.

              • Seek balance in your life.

For example, if you disagree with someone, take time to consider the other person's side of the argument.

                • Allow yourself to change your mind.

Learn to let go of negativity and situations you can't control.

                • Conserve your emotional energy for what you actually can change: yourself and your own life. Now that's conscious living!

                • Live your own truth.

As a teenager, you might have gravitated toward peers who didn't judge you, which made you feel more comfortable. Perhaps, in actuality, you didn't have all that much in common with them. As an adult, you can now stay more true to your own beliefs.

                  • When you live your truth, you stay faithful to what's genuinely important to you.

                  • Take action!

Become interested and involved in the goals you've set. Put effort into achieving those objectives and you'll be well on the road to living consciously.

                    Learn.

Take a few minutes each day to try something new. Pick up a book you've wanted to read or learn a new skill. By doing this, you're starting to become conscious of your life and the things you can do with it.

                    • Stop.

Take some time to stop throughout the day and look around. Be aware of where you are and what's around you. Become conscious of your surroundings and notice how you fit into them.

                      • Notice the details such as the green on the trees, or the condensation dripping down the side of the cup.

                      • Become in tune with what your body feels and actually search out the sensations of your fingers and toes while feeling your chest rise and fall with each breath.

                      Breathe.

Take deep breaths and be in the moment. Don't think about what you've done or what you still have to do, just take a minute or two to just breathe!

                      • Do what interests you.

To live consciously is to cease wasting time doing activities you’re not really interested in. When you make a personal vow to live consciously, you’re opening the door to a new, more joyous existence.

                        • What do you truly seek?
                        • With whom do you choose to spend time?
                        • How can you spend leisure time in ways that re-charge you and bring special joy?
                        • How can you become more psychologically engaged in your work to increase your performance?
                        • Are you taking care of your physical self the way you want and obtaining the results you desire?

Your answers to these questions will lead you down the path of conscious living.
