"Here's my day. I wake up in a cold sweat, go to a job I that frustrates me, officially panic about 2-3 times a day, go to the bathroom every half-hour and am a moody b*tch to friends and family. What can I do to stop the constant anxiety that is ruling my life?"

Hi Angela.

I'm going to do my best to help you! Anxiety attacks are NOT even remotely fun to experience once, let alone multiple times per day.

Obviously, the main goal is to find the underlying cause(s) of your anxiety. Is it your job, financial or other situation in life? The anxiety is simply the result of it.

Here are a few tutorials to help you followed by a number of popular methods to help you lower your anxiety level.

Practice deep breathing.

One of the most effective ways to cope with anxiety is deep breathing. Deep breaths get much-needed oxygen to your brain and throughout your body, relaxing your muscles. The increased air to your body and mind helps you calm down in times when you would normally become stressed out.
  • When you notice that you're beginning to get nervous, pay attention to your breathing. For a few days, practice deep breathing in a relaxed, private, comfortable environment where you're not rushed. Put your hand on your belly, and make your hand rise and fall with each breath. Be sure to take in a slow, full breath. Exhale slowly.

  • If you practice this deep breathing exercise before the moment of truth, you'll be equipped to control your breathing when a stressful situation occurs. When the pressure is on, and you notice your heartbeat beginning to rise, simply pay attention to your breathing and do what you've practiced.

Affirmations.

Anxiety affirmations are simply positive statements that you can say to yourself in those moments when you start to feel anxious. You can use these at any time and for any reason to calm your nerves and bring peace of mind.

For example, you can tell yourself, "I can overcome my fears because I am in control," or "I no longer need to be frightened. I allow myself to receive the light of who I am.” Any statement that replaces the anxious thoughts with a positive feeling will work.

  • Say these affirmations during anxious moments as often as you need to and continue affirming the positive thoughts until the anxious moment has passed.
  • Choose affirmations that speak to you and help you overcome your fear of anxiety. Affirmations must focus on the present and they should be about you, not anyone else.

By using these affirmations when you are feeling anxious, you are literally reprogramming your mind. In doing so, you will be able to think in a more positive manner, and you can also use these affirmations to refocus your mind away from your anxiety and fear.

Exercise.

Your body is made to move. If you sit at a desk all day, you'll likely face greater challenges with worry and stress than someone who's always on the move. Exercise provides tremendous stress relief, an outlet for frustration and a boost to your overall self-confidence. All of these contribute to a peaceful feeling and less anxiety on a daily basis.

Face your fears.

If you worry constantly, you may not be leaving your comfort zone often enough. Seek opportunities to stretch your mental boundaries in ways that aren't extremely stressful. As your mind and body become used to taking on challenges in dealing with your nerves, give yourself greater challenges to increase your ability to handle them.
  • If you're in the habit of shying away from things that stress you out, purposefully put yourself into situations that you aren't sure about. This will help you build confidence. The more steps you take outside of your comfort zone, the better equipped you'll be when the real challenges of life cause you to feel anxious.

Visualize.

One of the most effective ways to overcome anxiety is the technique of visualization. Choose a quiet space in your home, light some candles, and close your eyes.
  • Imagine yourself in your ideal situation. Feel how calm you are and visualize letting go of your worries. Think about how happy you'll be once your source of stress has been diminished. Positive visualization can help you move toward the happier vision you've created in your mind.

Seek support.

Talk to someone who has been in a similar situation. Reaching out to friends and family or seeking professional help can do wonders to help you get rid of your anxiety.
  • Once you've seen that someone else has gone through and overcome what you're experiencing, it gives you great hope that you, too, can do the same.
Stop letting anxiety control you. Take the reins and let anxiety and worries know that you are the one in the driver's seat of your life.

Passionflower.

Passionflower is a popular herb that has been known to help reduce anxiety. For many, passionflower is as effective as some prescription drugs. It also helps with insomnia since anxiety and insomnia often go hand in hand.

St. John's Wort.

St. John's Wort has been used as a supplement for centuries. It's a natural herb that can help with both depression and anxiety. It's best used for mild to moderate cases.

Valerian Root.

This is another natural anxiety herb. It's an excellent choice if you also have trouble sleeping. Valerian root can be taken as a tea or a capsule and should be taken approximately two hours before you go to bed.

Acupuncture.

Acupuncture is an ancient art that can reduce your anxiety by enabling you to feel calm and relaxed. It involves the use of thin needles that are used to relax your muscles.

Meditation.

Pick a time each day when you can meditate. Find a quiet, relaxing place and focus on your breathing while you relax. Next, immerse yourself in visualizing that you are living the life you desire. Meditation can relax, inspire, and motivate you.

Do not underestimate the power of meditating and clearing your mind (even if it's only briefly at the outset). Build on it!
